100 years ago — March 1912

LIME ROCK — George, the faithful old stage horse, has been sold to Mr. Goldman who lives at North East Center.

LAKEVILLE — Postmaster Stuart has installed a new stamp canceling machine of the latest design. It greatly facilitates the work of sorting the mail, as it is said that an operator when accustomed to its use can cancel 100 stamps on letters in one minute.

LAKEVILLE — Chester Thurston will enter the employ of the A.F. Roberts Co. April 1st. George Joynes finishes his duties at Bartram and Everts, and Peter Flynn leaves the Wononsco House to take a position at Bartram and Everts.

50 years ago — March 1962

SALISBURY — Jerome P. Clark, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Clark II, has accepted a position as a co-pilot with the Mohawk Airlines and is presently based in Ithaca, N.Y.

LAKEVILLE — A large beaver was seen at midnight last Tuesday on the sidewalk in front of the Ben Franklin store by a Lakeville couple who were driving by in their car. When they stopped the car, the beaver ambled across the road and disappeared up behind the Fire House in the direction of the Lake.

FALLS VILLAGE — Laurie Blodgett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Blodgett of Prospect Street, was guest of honor at a birthday party at her home last Friday.

25 years ago — March 1987

Investigators continued to search the Hideaway Lake area of Wassaic, N.Y., this week for clues to explain the March 19 crash of a Bell helicopter that killed two New York men. The copter was examining cable routes for the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. Police identified the victims as Robert Allen Slater, 37, of New Hartford, N.Y., the pilot, and Dominick J. Sacco Jr., 36, of Rome, N.Y.

Robert J. Pallone

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955 in Torrington, the son of the late Joesph and Elizabeth Pallone.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
