John Edward ‘Jack’ Forster

CORNWALL — John Edward “Jack” Forster, 95, passed away on March 10, 2012, at Sharon Hospital with family members at his side.Born July 13, 1916, in Glen Rock, N.J., Jack was the only child of Elizabeth (Stroh) and Harold Forster. After growing up in New Jersey, he graduated from Yale University in 1937, and served his country as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Harriet Soule in May 1943, in Montclair, N.J. They raised their family in Caldwell, N.J., and Ridgefield, Conn., before moving to Cornwall in 1982.Jack was a lifelong railroad buff, an accomplished dowser and a long-distance bicycler. With a strong love of choral music, Jack sang with the HousaTonics, the Cornwall Village Congregational Church choir, and as a resident of Geer Village, the Geer Choraleers. He volunteered for many years as a first aid instructor for the American Red Cross, in the radiology department of Sharon Hospital, and for Lifeline, installing emergency response equipment for homebound residents.He took an active interest in his family, and is survived by his three children, Bradford Forster of Sumter, S.C., John Forster of Chesterfield, N.H., and Jane Michaud of Dummerston, Vt.; his four grandchildren, Brian Forster and his wife, Amanda, of Decatur, Ind., Kei Forster of Boston, Mass., Mark Michaud and his wife, Margaretha, of Edmond, Okla., and Stephanie Musho and her husband, Edward, of Portland, Ore.; his six great-grandchildren, Rosemary Forster, Stephanie, Matthew and Maxwell Michaud, and Ilianna and Jane Musho; and his brother-in-law, Scoville Soule of Cornwall.Jack was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Harriet, who passed away May 18, 2007.Memorial services will be held at the United Church of Christ in Cornwall, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 31. The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
