Is NASCAR in their future?

NORTH CANAAN — The annual Pack 22 Cub Scout Pinewood Derby brought fierce competition and some crazy cars to the North Canaan Elementary School gym March 17.In addition to Cub Scouts, there are divisions for siblings, parents, den leaders and businesses. Veterans were well-represented with the local Marine Corps League and Torrington AmVets. It all led to heats that pitted, in one instance, a husband against his wife (she won) and a granddaughter against her grandpa (she won). The imagination that goes into cars, carved out of regulation pine blocks, never fails to amaze. There were two “cheese” cars this year, a Mr. Potato Head car, a cob of corn complete with tiny tractor (Laurelbrook Farm) and another made aerodynamic with a syringe mounted along the top (Becton-Dickinson).

Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.
