Tilden Richard ‘Dick’ McGhee

SALISBURY — Tilden Richard “Dick” McGhee, 79, of Housatonic River Road died March 12, 2012, at Sharon Hospital. He was the husband of Barbara (Duntz) McGhee. Dick was born May 17, 1932, in Sharon, the son of the late Elsie (Ball) and Theodore Richard McGhee.Dick was a mason and worked for various companies throughout the Northwest Corner. For the past 10 years he had been employed at The Hotchkiss School where he worked in the housekeeping department. He was a member of the Salisbury Congregational Church. Dick also enjoyed coon hunting, taking his children and grandchildren fishing and watching the NASCAR races on television.In addition to his wife he is survived by his five children, Debra Lavalette of Mill River, Mass., Joann Garfield of East Canaan, Barbara McGhee of Washington Depot, Pam Carlson of North Canaan and Ted McGhee of Salisbury; his three sisters, Mildred Ongley of Salisbury, Shirley Decker of Norfolk and Polly Cimorelli of Poughkeepsie; his eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be sent to the Falls Village Ambulance, 35 Railroad St., Falls Village, CT 06031 or to the Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Service, PO Box 582, Salisbury, CT 06068. Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
