Danehy receives positive review

WINSTED — The Board of Education held an executive session during its Feb. 7 meeting at the request of Superintendent of Schools Thomas Danehy to discuss his performance, which was described as “excellent” after the meeting. The executive session was initially listed on the meeting’s agenda as an “update on superintendent’s goals.”In announcing the executive session, Board Chairman Susan Hoffnagle said the executive session was to discuss an appraisal of Danehy’s performance “so there would be no surprises by the end of the year.”“This is a solely matter of a performance review, unless the superintendent chooses to hold it in public session, which it is his prerogative,” Hoffnagle said.Danehy requested the meeting be held behind closed doors.Hoffnagle said in an email following the meeting that “the Superintendent overall is doing an excellent job. I am pleased that he took the opportunity on his own initiative to solicit the views of the board as to what is working well and where he should devote more attention.”The board voted unanimously to go into executive session and spent more than an hour discussing Danehy’s performance.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
