Gustave F. Deister

WASSAIC — Gustave F. Deister, 90, a longtime resident of Wassaic, died Jan. 29, 2012, at Sharon Health Care Center. Mr. Deister was a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 26 years, retiring in 1984. Born Nov. 2, 1921, in Peine-Stederdorf, Germany, he was the son of the late Martha (Schaprian) and Herman Deister. He was a 1939 graduate of Newtown High School in Newtown, N.Y. From 1942 to 1945, he served in the U.S. Army in the combat zones of North Africa and Italy. On Oct. 4, 1947, in Wassaic, he married Margaret Rivenburgh, who survives at home. Mr. Deister was a life member of the Wassaic Fire Company. During his tenure as a member, he served on the Board of Directors and held the offices of foreman, secretary and president. He also served the community as a member of the Board of Fire Commissioners of the Wassaic Fire District. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Amenia and served as an elder of the Wassaic Presbyterian Church. He was a former Webelos leader for Boy Scout Troop No. 29 and a member of the Amenia-Wassaic Senior Citizens.In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Barbara E. Lisi, and her husband, Paul J., of Newburgh, N.Y.; two sons, Paul F. Deister of Luling, La., and Peter G. Deister and his wife, Margaret A., of Amenia; three grandchildren, Joseph P. Lisi of Ithaca, N.Y., Matthew P. Deister and his fiancee, Jessica Wilson, of Wassaic and Austin M. Deister of Amenia. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Herman Deister. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Hufcut Funeral Home in Dover Plains. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, at the United Presbyterian Church in Amenia. Burial with full military honors will follow at Amenia Island Cemetery. On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
