Students return, report on life in ‘real world’

FALLS VILLAGE — In an annual tradition, Housatonic Valley Regional High School was proud to welcome nine graduates of the class of 2011 back to speak to this year’s seniors about their experiences in college and the work force. Josh Toomey, who took a gap year, reminded the students that they need to keep their grades up throughout senior year if they plan on applying to college after the end of senior year. “I didn’t realize that my rank in class would be affected by my end-of-year grades,” Toomey said. This year’s Hurricane Irene presented unique challenges for several students as they were beginning the semester. Cassidy Hammond at Roger Williams University reported having to “rough it” when the school lost power, forcing students to rely on barbecues and picnics for meals until power was restored. The alumni who visited the high school were (pictured left to right) Mike Kenny(Sacred Heart University), Nataly Lake-Ginouves (Southern Connecticut State University), Olivia Montoya (Stanford University), Sam Carling (University of Alabama), Will Schutt (full-time employment), Apryl Classey (Northwestern Connecticut Community College), Josh Toomey (gap year), Cassidy Hammond (Roger Williams University) and Ben Finkelstein (Hobart and William Smith Colleges).

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
