Listeners tune in to environmental issues

MILLBROOK — WAMC Northeast Public Radio and the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook have teamed to produce a new radio show, “Earth Wise: A look at our changing environment.” The radio show will air on WAMC with two-minute segments Monday through Friday, at 11:10 a.m. and 4:04 p.m. “Our goal is to inspire listeners to make informed decisions about environmental issues facing society,” said scientist and Cary President Bill Schlesinger. “Each listener has the capacity to be a positive change in the world.”Schlesinger will narrate the show, which will focus on the Earth. Every show will cover a new relevant topic about the Earth with coverage on climate change, energy, sustainable living, agriculture and threats to air, water and wildlife. Each show will also tell listeners what they can do to help make a difference when dealing with such relevant global topics. The radio show was formed to give radio listeners “a greater sense of ecological literacy,” according to the Cary Institute, as well as “to educate them on the science behind environmental issues.” The information is to be delivered in a user-friendly manner, so that no matter one’s environmental or scientific background the information can be understood. Schlesinger will also rely on information from national experts to help listeners understand the policy and science of current issues affecting the environment. “All of us at WAMC are incredibly happy with Earth Wise,” said Alan Chartock, WAMC president and CEO. “Our listeners have been asking for even more environmental programming and now they’ve got it. Dr. Bill Schlesinger is a brilliant scientist with a great voice, just made for radio. The Cary Institute is the gold standard for environmental research and we are grateful to them for making this happen.”The first show has already aired, debuting on Monday, Jan. 2. The program reaches parts of seven northeastern states, including New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. WAMC is headquartered out of Albany, and is a member of National Public Radio, as well as an affiliate of Public Radio International. Earth Wise is available for syndication to other radio stations and listeners can also tune in online at earthwiseradio.org, keep updated on Twitter @earthwiseradio and join the conversation at Facebook.com/EarthWiseRadio.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
