Arthur Garfield Palmer Jr.

SHARON — Arthur Garfield Palmer Jr., 90, of Cambridge, N.Y., died Dec. 20, 2011, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, Vt.Born Oct. 17, 1921, in Sharon, he was the son of the late Pauline (Masius) and Arthur G. Palmer. After graduating from Dover Plains High School, he attended Cornell University before joining the United States Army. He proudly served his country from 1942 to 1946 and earned the rank of sergeant. He saw action in the Pacific Islands and Japan and earned the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and a Purple Heart. On Aug. 11, 1943, he married Minnie Carol Wahler, his childhood sweetheart. They were married for 65 years.After he returned from the war, Art established Stone Church Farm in Dover Plains and he and Carol raised their family. Upon retirement, they moved to Cambridge in 1985.Art occupied his retirement time repairing and refinishing furniture and dealing in antiques. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and raising horses. He was a devoted family man who will be greatly missed.Survivors include five sons, Arthur G. Palmer III and his companion, Ingrid, Robert Palmer and his wife, Susan, Stephen Palmer, David Palmer and Daniel Palmer and his wife, Marthanne; two daughters, Nancy and Dawn Palmer; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Palmer, Heather Palmer, Lisa Spivey, Robert Jamie Palmer, Stephan Palmer, Christopher Palmer, Alicia Palmer, Meredith Palmer, Amber, Joey, Amber Carol and Arthur Marks; and nine great-grandchildren, Sean, Christopher, Matthew, Joshua, Tyler, Meadow, Gabriel, Sophia and Benjamin.A private funeral service was held at the Ackley & Ross Funeral Home in Cambridge, with burial at the Palmer family plot at Valley View Cemetery in Dover Plains.Memorial donations may be sent to the Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad, PO Box 52, Cambridge, NY 12816.Go online to www.ackleyrossfuneralhome.com to share a memory or send a condolence.

Water main cleaning in North Canaan

Blues legend Robert Cray will be bringing his stinging, funky guitar and soulful singing to Infinity Hall Norfolk on Friday, March 29.

A five-time Grammy winner, Cray has been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame and earned The Americana Music Awards Lifetime Achievement for Performance. He has played with blues and rock icons including Albert Collins, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton and many more.

Cabaret comes to St. Andrew's in Kent

Music in the Nave will again tap into local talent April 6 at 7 p.m. when its features George Potts in an intimate cabaret concert in the St. Andrew’s Church parish house.

Pott is a well-known figure in the community, both through his presence in the perennially popular Fife ‘n Drum, the restaurant started by his father-in-law, renowned pianist Dolph Trayman, and through his own career as a folk musician.
