Three businesses struck by an early morning burglar

NORTH CANAAN — Three local businesses were burglarized during the early morning hours of Dec. 23.At about 3:15 a.m., when a security alarm sounded at Rite Aid Pharmacy at 76 Main St., neighboring residents were roused and went to windows that overlook the store and parking lot. State police were called and later reported that witnesses said a lone individual kicked in one of the glass front doors. Police arrived to find the burglar had fled the scene.Rite Aid employee Tessa Taylor was one of the first on the scene. She lives closest and is first on the alarm company’s call list. She told The Lakeville Journal a screwdriver, presumed to have been in the burglar’s possession, was left at the scene. The burglar apparently grabbed about $600 worth of cigarettes from behind the front counter. He then left, apparently crawling back through the hole in the broken glass. The front doors remained locked, even though they can be unlocked from the inside using a thumb-turn.Witnesses told police the suspect left in a gray or tan mid-sized sedan, speeding away with the vehicle lights off. While they were searching for the car, troopers discovered two Church Street businesses about a half mile away had also been broken into. The Great Wall Chinese Restaurant and Subway sandwich shop are adjoining businesses at 97 and 101 Church St.No details were given by police on how entry was gained to those establishments or what, if anything, was taken. The burglaries remain under investigation.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
