Holiday events bring Christmas to Colebrook

COLEBROOK — Two events held on Saturday, Dec. 10, brought holiday spirit to the center of town.Children and adults of all ages enjoyed the sixth annual Breakfast with Santa event, which was held at the Colebrook Congregational Church on Smith Hill Road. Visitors to the church enjoyed plenty of pancakes, eggs and juice, while the young ones got to visit with the jolly old elf himself.“We started this because it seemed as if there weren’t too many Christmas celebrations for the little ones,” organizer and church member Linda Farnham said. “We’ve had over 400 people at these events, and the church has had a great time organizing it.”Meanwhile, the town’s annual holiday fair was held at the Colebrook Town Hall.All of the floors were transformed into spaces for vendors to sell various items, including jewelry, ornaments, food and other holiday-themed trinkets.Fair co-organizer Amanda D’Urso said that 23 vendors participated at this year’s event.“I can’t estimate how many residents attended, but I think there were hundreds,” D’Urso said. “We had a good day. I think we had the Christmas spirit there. Everyone who attended left with a good feeling.”One of the residents who left the fair with a good feeling was First Selectman Tom McKeon.“I think these events are great for Colebrook,” McKeon said. “It gives everyone an assortment of things to do. It also brings everyone in town together.”

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
