In appreciation: Edmund Dean

Mere words cannot express the loss of Edmund Dean to the town of Falls Village or to the many people whose lives he touched. Over the years, he was an active member of town boards to help Falls Village progress to where it stands today. He was one of those special people that the town was fortunate to have, helping people in need and not wanting any recognition for his deeds.Edmund was a dairy farmer who, in his later years, also loved growing plants, vegetables and flowers. He was a wonderful cook and baker, making many pies for church affairs to help raise money for the congregation. During his high school years, his classmate Fred Bate told me they called him the “Dean of Radio.” During the 1930s there weren’t many people that could repair radios, but Edmund could because he was “a natural” with electronics.Whenever I had a conversation with Edmund, he always left me with a history lesson of Falls Village and the surrounding towns. One couldn’t wait to talk to him again; he was intelligent, interesting and knowledgeable on an abundance of subjects. We and everyone in the town of Falls Village will miss you, Edmund, for everything you have done for all of us.John and Mary BelterLime Rock

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
