Cornelia ‘Connie’ (Dawe) Smith

NORTH CANAAN — Cornelia “Connie” (Dawe) Smith, 92, of Westbrook, Conn., formerly of North Canaan, passed away Nov. 19, 2011. Connie was born in Bristol, Conn., on June 13, 1919, to the late Fannie (Ford) and George Dawe. She is survived by her daughter, Sarah L. Smith and her husband, David Sermersheim, of Killingworth, Conn.; her son, Peter W. Smith and his wife, Claire, of Westbrook; her son, Jay B. Smith of Guilford, Conn.; her grandchildren, Megan E. Smith, Caitlin N. Smith, Sarah Charlotte Smith, Anne L. Smith and Hayley C. Smith; and her brother, George Lyman Dawe of Illinois.In addition to her parents, Connie was predeceased by her loving husband, Harold F. Smith Sr.; her son, Harold F. Smith Jr.; and her sister, Virginia D. Coughlin.Connie will be missed by her friend and caregiver for many years, Anella Brilinkeviciene, as well as her daughter-in-law, Donna P. Smith.A funeral service was held at the First Congregational Church of Westbrook on Nov. 22. Burial followed at the Ashley Falls Cemetery in Sheffield, Mass. Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
