Holiday events light up night sky, hearts of all ages

NORTH CANAAN — The  Christmas Festival, Parade of Lights and Holiday Lighting brought crowds to the streets of downtown North Canaan and the Lawrence Field Pavilion Nov. 27, kicking off the holiday season in grand style.

Fire trucks, ambulances, motorcycles, tractors and haywagons, strung with thousands of lights arrived to the sound of Christmas music, wailing sirens and cheers of appreciation.

The evening, sponsored by the Canaan Chamber of Commerce and Canaan Fire Company, has in its short history always been well-attended and joyful, despite three years that brought either rain, snow or bitter cold. The mid-50s chill on Sunday evening was perfect. It will be included in plans for next year.

Cookies, hot chocolate and holiday music by the North Canaan Elementary School band were enjoyed under the pavilion. Children ran in and out of and around the lighted trees and reindeer on the field.

Of course, the highlight was Santa Claus, who arrived in style on the Canaan Fire Company’s antique REO — which also carried a large Christmas tree on its  back.

The line was long, but Santa greeted each child, listening carefully to all their Christmas lists.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
