Commission approves radio ads to promote Winsted

WINSTED — Will radio advertisements on WZBG 97.3 FM promoting the town bring in holiday shoppers?That’s what the Economic Development Commission is banking on.The commission unanimously approved to spend $400 for the radio advertisements during their meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Town Hall.Commission Vice Chairman Dick Labich made the motion for the expenditure.Labich said the radio spots will be on for two weeks starting on Monday, Nov. 28.“The merchants seem to go for it,” Labich said. “We would have a shop locally, buy locally series of advertisements. The message is to do your shopping in Winsted. Don’t go to the malls or to Canton. We have a wide assortment of stores in Winsted.”Labich said that during the first week of the promotion, disc jockeys on the radio station would be promoting businesses in Winsted through various giveaways of local merchandise.In the second week, a series of “shop locally, buy locally” 60 second radio advertisements will be on the air at various times on the station.In the “shop locally, buy locally” series of advertisements, Labich said that no specific business would be mentioned.Labich said that the first radio advertisements would promote two events: Christmas on Main Street on Saturday, Dec. 3, and the Open Studios at Whiting Mills event on Saturday, Dec. 3, and Sunday, Dec. 4.“Friends of Main Street are meeting tomorrow on this, so I have to give them a go ahead or a no go ahead,” Labich said. “We’re under the gun because we have to get [advertisement] copy of this to the station by Nov. 30.”While he eventually voted to approve the expenditure, Commission Chairman Bill Pratt was initially skeptical of Friends of Main Street’s ability to put together the radio advertisements.“I don’t have confidence in Friends of Main Street carrying this off,” Pratt said. “They didn’t get a car show this year for the Fall Foliage Festival.”“That had nothing to do with Friends of Main Street,” member Pam Banks said. “The Elks Club are the ones who decided not to put on the car show. It probably had to do with where Friends of Main Street put them, but they had a chance to voice an opinion on that, but they did not.”Pratt added that he hopes that multiple businesses choose to be open during the Christmas on Main Street event.“We need an agreement from the merchants downtown that they are going to be open with a holiday mentality,” Pratt said. “Having the open studios will be an excellent draw in town.”

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
