It’s hard to pick winners

Last week’s record, 6-10; for the season, 90-56. Pick of the Week, 0-1; for the season, 8-2.

I’ve had bad weeks before, but never have I taken such a pounding as I did last week. I picked six road teams and only one of those teams, the Jags, won. As for my Pick of the Week, the Browns forgot to show up — at home, no less. The Jets, Chargers, Panthers and Eagles all played at home, yet none of them could muster a victory. It just wasn’t my week.

Here we are in the 10th week of the season and only the Packers and the 49ers look like a lock to win their respective divisions. Parity in the league continues to make it harder and harder to pick winners, but I’m not giving up. Let’s get on with it, and good luck with your picks:

Thursday, Nov. 17

New York Jets at Denver — I know that everybody likes Tim Tebow, but face it, completing two of eight passes just isn’t going to get it done. The Jets are smarting from their Patriots loss and really need a win. I’ll stick with the Jets, 23-17.

Sunday, Nov. 20

Carolina at Detroit — Cam Newton continues to play well, but the Lions are in a must-win situation if they hope to remain in the wild card race. The Lions win this one, 27-23.

Tampa Bay at Green Bay — As I have said for the previous nine weeks, I’ll stick with the Packers until someone beats them. I’ll make Green Bay my Pick of the Week, 33-17.

Dallas at Washington — I don’t know about you, but I think the Cowboys are ready to take off. The Skins will play tough at home against their bitter rivals, but in the end the Cowboys come out on top, 24-20.

Buffalo at Miami — I like both of these teams, but it looks to me that the Bills may be heading downward while the Dolphins are on the rise. I’ll take Miami in this one, 23-20.

Jacksonville at Cleveland — They scorched me last week but I’m going to give the Browns one more chance. Cleveland wins this one, 19-17.

Tennessee at Atlanta — The Titans are coming off an impressive road win over the Panthers, while the Falcons lost a heartbreaker at home to the Saints. This should be a real good matchup, but in the end the Falcons prevail, 27-23.

Oakland at Minnesota — Can the Raiders make it two in a row on the road? Why not? I’ll stick with Oakland, 20-17.

Cincinnati at Baltimore — This is a huge matchup in the AFC North Division. Both teams are 6-3 and coming off a loss. However, the Ravens lost on the road while the Bengals got beat at home, so I think the Ravens rebound at home with a 28-20 win.

Seattle at St. Louis — Neither team is headed to the postseason, but at this point I like the Rams at home, 23-16.

Arizona at San Francisco — As long as the 49ers don’t let up they should cruise by the Cards en route to an eventual division crown. I’ll take the Niners, 27-17.

San Diego at Chicago — The Chargers are in trouble while the Bears continue to play well. I like Chicago in this one, 28-23.

Philadelphia at New York Giants — Mike Vick is banged up, and as of now the Cowboys are clearly bearing down on the Giants. New York can ill afford to lose this game, especially because they have a brutal schedule coming up, including games against the Saints, Packers, Jets and two with Dallas. The Giants win this one, 30-20.

Monday, Nov. 21

Kansas City at New England — The Pats looked like world beaters last week against the Jets and should have no trouble with the Chiefs. New England will win, 33-13.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
