NCCC to hold benefit for animal sanctuary

WINSTED — Northwestern Connecticut Community College will hold a benefit for the Last Post Animal Sanctuary on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Joyner Learning Center. The animal sanctuary, located in Falls Village since 1982, is still dealing with the effects of a fire that occurred in early November.“We lost three buildings and 30 cats because of the fire,” business manager Susan Gregan said. “We also lost a brand new washing machine, two water heaters, a stove, a refrigerator and 14 kitten cribs. It was just devastating. We are insured, but insurance only covers so much. No matter how much the policy pays, it is never adequate enough.”Despite the fire, Gregan said the animal shelter is still open and will press on.“We are determined to not let this get us down,” she said. “We have a positive outlook. We are asking the animal lover community for their help in order for us to do the best we can in this horrific economy.”The Joyner Learning Center is located on Park Place East. For more information, call the shelter at 860-824-0831.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
