Dudley Hubbard Grimes

GOSHEN — Dudley Hubbard Grimes, 71, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2019, at his home surrounded by his family. 

He was the loving husband of Mary (Richards) Grimes for 36 years.  

Born Jan. 10, 1948, in Waterbury, Conn., he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Hubbard) and Charles Grimes. Dudley attended The Hotchkiss School and the University of North Carolina and received a B.A. in English from Southern Connecticut State University.  

Dudley grew up spending summers on Martha’s Vineyard and moved there full-time in 1972. He met Mary in 1981 and they married in  1983. In 1989 they moved off island, living in several towns before building the house they designed together in Cornwall and, finally settling in Goshen.  

He always loved the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing and gardening. He loved tending to the earth. He also loved Native American culture and animals.  

Dudley owned and operated his own Master Gardener/landscape business for many years.  

In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Tyler Flint Grimes and his fiancée, Emily Huizenga, of Torrington; a brother, Timothy Grimes and his wife, Susie of Hamden, Conn.; and beloved pets Rita, Gonzo and Leodi.  

Friends may call on Sunday, May 26, at Montano-Shea Funeral Home in Winsted from 1 to 3 p.m.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
