FIRST TIME IN A DECADE

MILTON — The Webutuck girls varsity field hockey team won the sectional finals 3-2 in a game against Onteora at the Milton Sports Dome on Thursday, Nov. 3.Hannah Kitchen scored the first goal within the first three minutes. The second and third goals were scored by Sam Murphy.The girls won the first round semifinals game against Pine Plains the day before with a final score of 2-1. The goals were scored by KT Thompson and Claire Markonic, with one assist by Jane Markonic.Not only was this the first time the school’s varsity field hockey team won sectionals since Rosanne Persico’s 2001 team, but it was also the first time the school had a varsity field hockey team since 2007.“It was a great decision to move to the varsity level this year,” coach Kathleen Howard said.Howard said that the team overcame many obstacles throughout the season, including sickness, injuries and playing one player short.“We knew just to keep our heads held high and focus on the future [and] stay focused and motivated,” Howard said.Howard explained that she has strong players in every area of the field, from goalie to offense.“[Mid-fielder Claire] has good instinct on the field and has advanced ball-handling skills. She is very fast and can control the field tempo from end-line to end-line. [Defensive back] Sam is a force on our team. She controls the entire back and, when needed, to be offensive...[Defense Haley Scutieri] block-tackles low and uses this at just the right times. She shuts down many wings on her side with this,” she said.The team will be playing a regional game on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 4 p.m. at the Milton Sports Dome.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
