Punch expands Millbrook store

Millbrook — Punch, a popular retail store for clothes and household items, closed its Millerton store on July 25. But customers can still shop at the Millbrook store at 3262 Franklin Ave.“We loved being a part of Millerton. It was a great experience,” said owner Ruthie Bontecou. “But ultimately we decided it was the best decision for us to expand our Millbrook space. In order to do that, we needed to close our Millerton store and focus our energy here. It was a completely positive decision for us.”All items that were available at the Millerton store will be offered in Millbrook, along with a wider selection of baby clothes. Gift certificates purchased at the Millerton location are still valid in the Millbrook store. In addition to expanding the Millbrook store, Bontecou is working hard on a website. By early October, she hopes, customers will be able to purchase items online. The Millbrook store will be open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, contact Punch at 845-677-6796 or shoppunch@gmail.com.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
