WASSAIC — Wassaic’s annual summer festival — aptly called The Wassaic Project — will kick off on Thursday, Aug. 4, with a cake walk and concert before the art festival officially begins the following day.The cake walk will be held at Maxon Mills (37 Furnace Bank Road) at 6 p.m. and the concert will start at 7 p.m. at the Lantern Inn (14 Main St.). Both events will benefit the Wassaic Fire Company.The festival will run from Friday, Aug. 5, to Sunday, Aug. 7. The event advertises itself as “a free multi-disciplinary celebration of art, music and community featuring over 100 artists, 25 bands, film screenings, dance performances and more.”The festival takes place at Maxon Mills and the Luther Barn (15 Furnace Bank Road). Furnace Bank Road will be closed to vehicle traffic on Saturday evening to accommodate the heavy pedestrian presence.Parking for festival-goers can be found at the Pawling Corporation’s parking lot (32 Neilson Hill Road) and at the Wassaic firehouse (27 Firehouse Road).For more information about The Wassaic Project, including options for camping on location during the festival, visit www.wassaicproject.org.

Tuning up two passions under one roof

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
