Edward Zionce

NORTH CANAAN — Edward Zionce, 93, of Burlington, Conn., husband of the late Florence (Konopka) Zionce, died July 23, 2011, at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Nov. 13, 1917, the son of the late Katherine (Kochan) and Joseph Zionce and lived in Burlington for more than 60 years. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division. He entered active service in 1942, and served in several European campaigns. He was awarded the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars along with other military decorations. Ed worked for Connecticut Spring as a setup man until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the Gildo Consolini VFW Post in Avon, the American Legion, the Purple Heart Association and St. Patrick’s Church in Collinsville. He is remembered by his family as an avid Red Sox fan and someone who enjoyed mowing the lawn and listening to polkas.Ed is survived by his son, Richard, and daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Gundlach, of Norfolk; his daughter, Barbara Zionce of Easton; his sister, Josephine Konopka of Burlington; his brother-in-law, John Kostrisak of Avon; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Jennie Kostrisak; and three brothers, Stanley, Walter and John. A graveside service and burial was held July 27 in Collinsville.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 99 South Canaan Road, North Canaan, CT 06018. The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
