Pine Plains Regents results announced

PINE PLAINS — Stissing Mountain Middle/High School has released the results of the 2011 New York State Regents Exams.The school offered 12 Regents exams in a variety of subjects.The number of students taking the exams ranged from 104 for the global history and geography exam to seven students for the French exam.Pine Plains Superintendent Linda Kaumeyer said that she was happy to see the large numbers of students taking the Regents exams. She was also pleased with the number of students who decided to retake exams that they had previously scored poorly on instead of giving up.Kaumeyer noted that there were several middle school students who took the Regents exams as part of their advanced courses, and she was happy to see how highly many of them scored.Overall, the students scored well on several exams. To receive a passing score, the students must receive 65 percent of the possible points or more (not all questions are worth the same number of points). The students are considered to have reached the mastery level if at least 85 percent of all possible points are received.All students passed the French Regents. Ninety-eight percent passed the biology/living science exam with 58 percent achieving mastery. Ninety-six percent passed the U.S. history and government exam with 48 percent achieving mastery. Ninety-three percent passed the algebra exam and the Spanish exam. Eighty-nine percent passed the English exam with 34 percent achieving mastery.Only 52 percent of students passed algebra 2/trigonometry exam. Kaumeyer noted that this is a challenging course and a challenging exam.Kaumeyer also noted that any student who did not pass the exams is welcome to retake the test the next time it is offered.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
