Ketcham Hose Company’s convention and parade

DOVER PLAINS — The J.H. Ketcham Hose Company (Dover Plains Fire Department) will host the 65th annual Dutchess County Volunteer Fireman’s Convention and parade on Saturday, July 16.

The annual J.H. Ketcham Carnival opened on Wednesday, July 13, and will continue to Saturday,  July 16. Events are as follows:

Saturday, July 16

Convention parade at 5 p.m.

Fireworks

The J.H. Ketcham Hose Company strives to maintain an old-fashioned firemen’s carnival atmosphere, with the added attraction of rides. There will be food, drink, games of chance, bingo and rides for the children.

The main attraction will be the firemen’s parade on Saturday, drawing dozens of fire departments, bands, police departments and county officials. The fire departments and bands all are highly competitive, looking to win the coveted Best Overall trophy.

The parade route will be south on Route 22, from Route 343 to the Dover Fire Station 1. Expect road closures and delays during this period. The carnival grounds will be opposite Dover Station 1 at the Dover Elementary School.

The Dover Carnival is a safe, family event.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
