New restaurant coming to town

The Black Goose Grille will open this summer in the former Twin Oaks coffee shop.SHARON — Area residents and visitors will soon have a new restaurant for both eat-in meals and take-out service when Sharon resident Robert Caeners opens The Black Goose Grille in the Sharon shopping plaza. Caeners calls himself a “restaurant lifer.” For the past 11 years, he was the general manager of the Silo Ridge Country Club, supervising all food service and catering there. Before that he worked in the food service business his entire career. He said he hopes to have the renovated restaurant (formerly the Twin Oaks Cafe) open for business by the last week in July. The Black Goose Grille will be, according to Caeners, “A friendly, casual café-grill, a nice place for local residents and visitors to go.” He stressed that ingredients from area sources will be used as much as possible. The restaurant will offer 10-ounce hamburgers made from local beef. Not neglecting customers who are heart-healthy eaters, there will be salmon burgers and other seafood offerings. There also will be a choice of salads made from produce from local farms. In nice weather, meals can be served on the outdoor patio. When asked what the pricing would be, Caeners said, “This will be a family-friendly restaurant with very reasonable prices. It will not be expensive.”The Black Goose Grille will be open Tuesday through Sunday for breakfast and lunch. Dinner will be available four or five nights a week. There will be a take-out menu for patrons to eat at home or take on picnics or even camping trips. Breakfast foods (including homemade baked goods from area bakers) will also be available “to go.”

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
