75 years ago — June 1936

SALISBURY — Frank Knickerbocker is enjoying his annual vacation from his duties at the First National Store in Canaan.

LIME ROCK — Arthur Buttery and family motored to Bridgeport for the week end.

SALISBURY — George Parsons has fireworks for sale this year at the same old stand.

TACONIC — John O’Hara Sr. who was seriously injured last Monday when a dynamite cap which had somehow gotten into a keg of nails which Mr. O’Hara was using, exploded, injuring his thumb, index and middle finger of his right hand so badly it was necessary to amputate them, continues to make improvement at the Geer Hospital in Canaan where he was taken immediately after the accident. He is under the care of Dr. Elliott of that town.

50 years ago — June 1961

CANAAN — A completely new Drive-In Theater, but in the same locality of the former Canaan Theater, which was taken by the Connecticut Highway Department for the relocation of Route 7, is now under construction, and should be ready and equipped to open by the first week in August. The Canaan Theater will have paved roads in the area. A new screen tower is being constructed, as well as modern rest rooms and an eating pavilion.

SALISBURY — George Vincent has been accepted for admission to the Choral Conducting Class at Tanglewood. He is also a member of the Festival Chorus and the Tanglewood Choir.

Miss Anne Marie Knickerbocker, 14-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Knickerbocker of Taconic, has received her license as a “ham” operator from the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C. Her call letters are KN1STM. Mrs. Knickerbocker reports that Anne passed her examination as an amateur radio operator with high marks and her room, with all the radio equipment, looks more like a machine shop than a boudoir.

25 years ago — June 1986

FALLS VILLAGE — Eleanor and Francis Schindler will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Schindler were wed June 28, 1936, in Scranton, Pa., where they were born and raised.

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955 in Torrington, the son of the late Joesph and Elizabeth Pallone.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
