Summer reading program kicks off at library

MILLERTON — The NorthEast Millerton Library held a kickoff party on Sunday, June 26, for its summer reading program.Children up to age 18 were eligible to sign up for the statewide program.By reading, the children will earn entries into a raffle to win books, school supplies and other prizes. Each chapter book and every three picture books will earn one entry into the raffle drawing.The theme of this year’s program is “One World, Many Stories.”Pat Ambrose and KC Perkins were on hand to sign up the children.“We’ve been quite busy,” said Ambrose, holding up a stack of signup sheets. “There is a great deal of enthusiasm among the younger kids with reading.”She went on to say that for the young readers, “it’s a very strong family-bonding activity. And for the more independent readers, it’s just fun.”Nine-year-old Erin Sheehan was there to sign up. “I’m one of the best readers in my class,” she said.Sheehan is aiming to read 13 books this summer, starting with the popular “Twilight” series.Organizer Sarah Bellora said she hopes that the program will not only encourage reading, but will also introduce the younger generation to the library and make them familiar with all of the books, audio books, movies, programs and other services the library offers for their demographic.While talking about the importance of reading among children and teens, Bellora cited research that has shown that children who read more become more successful in life.The kickoff party had plenty of activities going on to draw in potential readers. Two by Two Zoo was on hand to introduce the children to their exotic petting zoo animals, including a young alligator, a kangaroo and a snake.Lunch, snacks and drinks were sold to help raise money to bring the Audubon Society to the library.The summer reading program will have events at the library throughout the summer, including an international gaming night and a Hawaiian luau.The library is also offering other programs that encourage summer reading, including the Battle of the Books and the Read for Green program.The Read for Green program is the library’s newest addition. It offers $3 for every book review written and blogged by participants.Readers between the ages of 3 and 18 can sign up for the summer reading program at the NorthEast-Millerton Library on Main Street. More information about the program can be found on its website, www.nemillertonlibrary.org.Readers can also sign up at the library, located on Main Street in Millerton, for the other programs.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
