Doris Barbara Bianchi

NORTH CANAAN — Doris Barbara Bianchi, 87, died peacefully with her family around her, on Oct. 9, 2018, at the Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she resided the last two years.

Doris was born on April 22, 1931, in Weehawken, N.J., and spent the majority of her life in Union City and Jersey City, N.J. Throughout her life, she attended various day programs that served individuals with disabilities. She loved school and “work,” and had many friends.

In 1998, she and her mother, Elizabeth, moved to Livingston, N.Y., to live closer to family in Red Hook, N.Y., and Lakeville.  She continued with her day program at COARC in Hudson, N.Y., well into her 80s.  Just prior to her move to Geer, when illness forced her to retire, she also took art classes through the evening adult education program near Hudson.

Doris loved to sew, write and sing. She gifted those she loved with her unique pot holders. She is remembered fondly as having a radiant smile, a feisty spirit and a great sense of humor.  Her smile could light up whatever room she was in.

Doris was predeceased by parents, Elizabeth and Charles Bianchi; and her two brothers, Charlie and Richard Bianchi, of Lakeville.

She is survived by her three nieces, Sandy Fisher and her husband, Jonathan, Cynthia Bianchi and her husband, Bill Wenkert, Laurie Bianchi and her husband, Michael Root; one nephew, Rick Bianchi and his wife, Claire; eight great-nieces and -nephews; and one great-great niece.

She is fondly remembered and loved by her family for her gift of finding joy in simple pleasures.

Services will be private. The family wishes to thank all of the Hummingbird Hill staff at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Their commitment to Doris’s comfort was remarkable, as was their compassion and care.
