New salon offers trip through wonderland

MILLERTON — In a shop in the heart of downtown Millerton, decorated with 19th-century furniture and photographs from local artists, Renee Wiley has opened a new hair salon and boutique. The shop, Hair on the Run, which has a Victorian “Alice in Wonderland” theme, is located on South Center Street, just off Main Street.Wiley, a former model, became interested in the beauty industry after helping fellow models do their hair and makeup. She has now been certified in hair styling and cutting for 27 years. She says that the difference between her work and that of others is that she designs each haircut to match the shape of each client’s face.“It’s like I’m sculpting their hair,” she said, describing her technique. There are other things that make her salon stand out.Her salon is also a boutique. She sells small items made by locals, including jewelry, hats and art. The art will follow a theme, which will change every month.A portion of all purchases made in the shop — either boutique items or salon services — will be donated to charity. Most of the donated proceeds will go toward children’s hospitals (St. Jude’s in particular) and breast cancer charities. There will also be a suggestion box for clients to recommend deserving charities. The shop offers general salon services such as cuts, coloring, perms, styling, up-dos, makeup and manicures (no pedicures). It will be open Thursday to Monday (closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Its phone number is 518-592-1400.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
