Clarence H. Kelsey Jr.

WASSAIC — Clarence H. Kelsey Jr., 78, a 57-year resident of Wassaic died June 11, 2011, at Sharon Hospital. He was born Dec. 31, 1932, in Sanford, N.Y., the son of the late Grace (Zurba) and Clarence H. Kelsey Sr. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He married Patricia Norbet on Sept. 6, 1958, in Amenia. She survives at home. He was a past chief, fire commissioner and longtime member of the Wassaic Fire Company. Mr. Kelsey was a plumber and steamfitter at the Wassaic Developmental Center for 32 years, retiring in 1988. After his retirement, he worked for the Dutchess County Office for the Aging for 12 years as a driver for the South Amenia Friendship Center and delivered meals to the homebound. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Robert C. Kelsey of Trenton, N.C., Jeffrey P. Kelsey of Middleburgh, N.Y., and P. Scott Kelsey of Wassaic; a sister, Donna Jaromin of Wassaic; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Michael S. Kelsey; and two sisters, Charlotte Mitschow and Jacqueline Moore. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 16, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Amenia. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wassaic Fire Company, Firehouse Road, Wassaic, NY 12592. The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
