Gerald Bauman Jr.

SHARON — Gerald Bauman Jr. passed away on June 4, 2011. He was born in Sharon on Feb. 3, 1928, and moved with his family to Miami in the 1930s. He graduated from Miami Senior High and joined the Army where he served as a master sergeant with the Allied forces in Japan after World War II. He attended the University of Miami and then the University of Florida, from which he graduated with a B.S. in chemical engineering in 1955.In 1952, he married Elizabeth Selfridge of Lakeville. After college he worked for the Dupont Corp. in New Jersey. During his 16 years in New Jersey, he was chairman of both the Marlboro Citizen’s Committee and the Planning Board. He played an instrumental role in creating change in local government, zoning laws and protecting the Burnt Fly Bog wetlands.After moving to Homestead, Fla., in 1974, he became very active in local, state and national political campaigns, serving with his wife on the Miami-Dade Republican Executive Committee. He also served as chairman of the Homestead-Redlands Republican Club. In addition to his wife, Gerald is survived by his son, Jeffrey; his daughters, Deborah, Lisa and Jenifer; his sister, Christine Spinks; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Gerald Bauman III; and his sisters, Nancy and Betsy.A memorial service will be held at the Branham Funeral Home in Homestead on Saturday, June 11, at 2 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Humane Society of Greater Miami.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
