Fire incinerates Amenia home

AMENIA — The residence of James Marshall, located at 5197 Route 22, was destroyed in a fire on the evening of Thursday, June 2.No one was home when the fire started and there were no injuries.Firetrucks and ambulances were dispatched around 9 p.m.Firefighters from Amenia, Wassaic, Millerton, Millbrook, Unionvale, Sharon and Lakeville responded to the second-alarm fire. Dover was on standby.It is uncertain when the fire started. When the Amenia Fire Department arrived on the scene minutes after receiving the call, the entire structure was fully engulfed in flames.Amenia Fire Chief Sean Howard said the investigation team on the scene was unable to determine the cause of the fire, but based on the damage, he believed that the fire began in or around the dining room.Deputy Sheriff TJ Hanlon of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office could not confirm the location of the start of the fire or the cause of the fire because the investigation is still ongoing.Marshall was the sole resident of the home. He has worked as a history instructor at Hotchkiss School in Lakeville since 1989, but is currently on leave.Firefighters and other workers worked until roughly 2:30 a.m. to put out the fire and to investigate the scene.The fire rekindled on Sunday afternoon, according to Howard, but was quickly doused.Faculty members at The Hotchkiss School are currently collecting funds for Marshall. Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
