Memorial Day holiday weekend a hit at Lime Rock Park

LIME ROCK — Memorial Day weekend at Lime Rock Park revved up May 28 with the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race, sped into May 29 with the Royals Garage Presents The Veterans Memorial Car Show and made a grand finish May 30 with the Rolex Sports Car Series and GT race.The Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race Saturday featured Mazda MX-5 Miatas, Mini Coopers, BMWs, Honda Civics, Kia Forte Coupes, MazdaSpeed 3s and VW GTIs.Despite threatening thunderstorms, the Memorial Day Rolex Sports Car Series and GT race was a success. It featured Daytona prototypes, Corvettes, Porsches, BMWs, Camaros and Mazda RX-8s. Although attendance was down a bit from last year, customers who did make it to the track seemed to be happy. “Goodness, given the weather forecast that some people were hearing, then seeing the deluge out my kitchen window early Monday morning, I thought it was going to be a disaster,” said John “Skip” Barber, owner of Lime Rock Park. “But of course it ended up a beautiful day and I am pleased with the turnout.”For results information from the weekend’s races, go to www.limerock.com.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
