Time for the carnival

We invite everyone to cruise our carnival; not to be confused with going on a Carnival Cruise. Thursday, June 2 ,through Sunday, June 5, the Commerford Brothers’ Carnival will be at Eddie Collins Field on Route 22 in Millerton, right across the road from Agway.Bring the whole family and enjoy games of chance, exciting rides and yummy carnival fare galore. It’s safe, wholesome, fun and a good way to show support for our local organizations. The Millerton Fire Company, American Legion Post 178 and Sunday in the Country will all be working together with us to make this a truly memorable event. The Millerton Lions met again on Wednesday, May 25, at American Legion Post 178, and we were joined by District Governor Stuart Wizwer and his wife, Eileen, who is president of a Lions Club in Sullivan County. The couple spoke of many programs available through Lions Club International, which happens to be the largest service organization in the world. Stuart Wizwer also shared with us a new acronym for our club — LIONS — Loving Individuals Offering Needed Service. I like that one. They were pleased to recognize our accomplishments as a club and excited to learn of our good working relationship with our local newspaper. Well, it works both ways, and it wouldn’t be possible without the cooperation and support from The Millerton News staff — namely Whitney Joseph and Betty Abrams. Thank you, ladies, you have been extremely helpful to this novice.Member Ralph Fedele, president of the North East Historical Society, invited everyone to attend the Film Works presentation on Sunday, June 5, at 11 a.m., at The Moviehouse in downtown Millerton. The award-winning film gives an inside look into the plans for the newly acquired Irondale Schoolhouse, which is to be relocated in the center of the village next to the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. It promises to be very interesting, it’s free to all and sure to be enlightening.Scholarship Chairman Ed Downey reported that out of 24 potential applicants for our annual scholarships, there are six students to be interviewed in early June; a decision will be made shortly thereafter. He and the committee look forward to interviewing such interesting candidates. I know I wouldn’t want to be the one making those decisions. Good luck, everyone. There will be a memorial service for lifetime member Bill Shaughnasey on the one-year anniversary of his passing. The service will be Tuesday, June 7, at Eddie Collins Field in Millerton. Come join us at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome and the more attending the more special the tribute will be. Last but not least, I want to thank everyone involved in the placement and removal of the American flags that are distributed throughout the village on special holidays. Most of us don’t even give a thought to how they get there, or the time and effort given by volunteers in our community. Volunteers are welcome (and needed) and can learn more by contacting Stacey Moore at 518-789-4508. A special thanks to Jim Campbell for spearheading this project for more than 25 years and giving selflessly of his time. Thank you, thank you, thank you, everyone.Till next time …Melanee Mayville lives, works and writes in Millerton. She has been a member of the Lions Club since 2008.

KENT—There will be a joyful noise in St. Andrew’s Church Easter morning when a set of handbells donated to the church some 40 years ago are used for the first time by a choir currently rehearsing with music director Susan Guse.

Guse said that the church got the valuable three-octave set when Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center closed in the late 1980s and the bells were donated to the church. “The center used the bells for music therapy for younger patients. Our priest then was chaplain there and when the center closed, he brought the bells here,” she explained.

Picasso’s American debut was a financial flop
Picasso’s American debut was a financial flop
Penguin Random House

‘Picasso’s War” by Foreign Affairs senior editor Hugh Eakin, who has written about the art world for publications like The New York Review of Books, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker and The New York Times, is not about Pablo Picasso’s time in Nazi-occupied Paris and being harassed by the Gestapo, nor about his 1937 oil painting “Guernica,” in response to the aerial bombing of civilians in the Basque town during the Spanish Civil War.

Instead, the Penguin Random House book’s subtitle makes a clearer statement of intent: “How Modern Art Came To America.” This war was not between military forces but a cultural war combating America’s distaste for the emerging modernism that had flourished in Europe in the early decades of the 20th century.
