Morsel Munk: funny name for a great outdoors store

WINSTED — Morsel Munk co-owner Brigitte Rouleau remembers exactly when her husband and co-owner Scott came up with the name for their outdoor store on 70 South Main St.“It was May 1, 2002, when Scott and I were hiking Bear Mountain in Salisbury,” she said. “A small little chipmunk ran across the hiking path we were on. Scott said, ‘Look at that! That’s a Morsel Munk!’ The name stuck ever since.”Morsel Munk offers gear for camping and hiking, outdoor recreational equipment, skateboards, longboards, rafts, dog toys, paddle boards, kites and all sorts of games and puzzles.“We offer a lot of fun things that you just can’t get at Walmart,” Scott Rouleau said. “We want people to grow young. Helping people have fun helps them to grow young.”“One big thing about our store is that we don’t want people to be intimidated,” Brigitte Rouleau added. “If you want to get into hiking, don’t be afraid to ask us questions. We will answer all of them. If you’re overwhelmed, that’s not having fun.”She said the store will eventually hold free clinics and demonstrations.Store hours are currently Wednesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.“However, we are here usually long past our regular hours,” Brigitte Rouleau said. “If you see the lights on in the store, stop on in!”For more information, call 877-284-1747 or visit their website at www.morselmunk.com

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
