Barbara (DeWeerd) Lemmen

NORTH CANAAN — Barbara (DeWeerd) Lemmen died Aug. 9, 2018, at Sharon Hospital. She had been living at Geer Village in North Canaan for six and a half years.

She was born in Holland, Mich., on Sept. 6, 1937, but grew up in Ohio, where she graduated as an RN from White Cross Hospital School of Nursing, Columbus, Ohio, in 1960.

She married Charles J. Lemmen in Holland on Sept. 3, 1960, and together they lived in Leeds, England; Cambridge, Mass.; Cleveland; Brooklyn, N.Y.; and in the Connecticut towns of Danbury and Falls Village before moving to North Canaan.

Very proud of her career as a nurse, she served as a medical-surgical nurse, an IV therapist, a recovery room nurse, a homecare nurse and a Head Start nurse. She retired in 1986.

During her long retirement, she pursued several other interests: she attended clock-making school, made jewelry, knitted and crocheted, wrote poetry and traveled to Europe three times.

Barbara was an avid reader and loved the English language. She was fascinated by the natural world, especially as revealed in the lives of wild animals. She was a member of Bat Conservation International. She was also thrilled by the vastness of the universe as revealed by astronomy and the depths of the oceans. She also loved archeology.

Barbara is survived by her husband, three children and four grandchildren: daughter Barbara E. Lemmen and her husband, Geoffrey Nunes Jr., of Swarthmore, Pa., and their children, Claudia and Alex; daughter Nicola L. Whitley of Concord, N.H., and her daughter, Hannah Whitley of Brookline, Mass.; son Charles S. Lemmen and his wife, Jen Margo, of Egremont, Mass., and their son, Elijah; and Barbara’s sister, Mary Edick and her husband, Jan Edick, of Littleton, N.H.

Barbara was predeceased by her grandson, Kevin H. Whitley, who died at age 19, which left her brokenhearted.

A memorial service will be held at a future date yet to be determined.
