Shirley Rogers

SALISBURY — Shirley Rogers, 88, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family members, on July 28, 2018, at Noble Horizons. 

She was born April 2, 1930, in Salisbury, to Irving H. Weir and Bertha A. Hazelton.

Shirley graduated from local elementary and high schools, and from the Packard Secretarial School in New York City. 

She met the love of her life, John E. “Jack” Rogers while working a summer job at the Interlaken Inn. They were married in 1952 and enjoyed 50 years of marriage.

Shirley worked as a secretary at Housatonic Valley Regional High School for five years before becoming a full-time mother to her three sons.

In her second career, she worked at Wagner McNeil Insurance Company for 13 years, followed by many years of private secretarial work.

Shirley was a lifelong member of the Salisbury Congregational Church, where she served as deaconess, clerk, in Sunday school, and as assistant treasurer. She was also active in the Garden Club, was a member of the National Wildlife Federation and volunteered for Sharon Hospital, Noble Horizons and the Salisbury Association. 

Her family always came first, but she also loved gardening, knitting, hiking, volunteering and traveling.

Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Edith Blodgett; her sons, Tom and his wife, Kathy, Jon and his wife, Sally, and Mike; her niece, Shirley Cannon; and her six grandchildren, Abbie, Emily, Jeff, Kathryn, Matt and Christina. 

She was predeceased by her husband, Jack; and her two brothers, Kenneth and Irving Weir.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Salisbury Congregational Church. The public is invited.
