Keeping track of park ownerships

LIME ROCK —When discussing the race track at Lime Rock Park, confusion often arises as to who owns what. Rick Roso, who handles public relations for the track, shared this explanation.“Lime Rock Park is owned by Lime Rock Park, L.L.C., which is John ‘Skip’ Barber.“The Skip Barber Racing School is owned solely by Skip Barber Racing School, L.L.C. A company called First Equity is a major shareholder.“The Skip Barber Racing School (SBRS) was started in 1975 by John “Skip” Barber. In 2000, Skip sold the school in its entirety.“SBRS is a valued customer of Lime Rock Park. SBRS rents from Lime Rock the track and the upper infield areas to conduct its Racing School, Driving School, High Performance Driving School and Skip Barber Race Series (both pro and amateur programs).”As for the company’s relationship with the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca track in Salinas, Calif., Roso said, “That facility is owned by the county of Monterey [California] as a public recreation area. The county has given the authority to operate the track, for the benefit of the County, to SCRAMP, the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula.“SCRAMP’s protocol is to award, every few years, for a fee, an exclusive ‘franchise’ to run a racing and driving school at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.”Skip Barber Racing School won that franchise once in the mid-1990s and at least once more since then.“References to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca were made because while Skip Barber still owned Skip Barber Racing School, he was responsible for SBRS meeting local Laguna Seca agreements regarding sound.”

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
