Eileen M. Strauss

AMENIA — Eileen M. Strauss, 79, a lifelong resident of Amenia, died peacefully at her home on March 29, 2011.Born Jan. 27, 1932, in Sharon, she was the daughter of the late Florence (Culligan) and John McEnroe. Eileen graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Amenia and attended Krissler Business School in Poughkeepsie. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Beauty Culture in Amenia. Mrs. Strauss was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia. On Aug. 16, 1952, she married Guenther Strauss in Amenia. Mr. Strauss died Nov. 21, 1999. Mrs. Strauss was the chef and co-owner of the Delavergne Farms Inn in Amenia for many years. She then worked at the Wassaic Developmental Center as a therapy aide until her retirement in 1985. She also was a hairdresser at various salons in the Amenia area. She is survived by her two sons, Shane Strauss and his wife, Donna, of Standfordville and Darryl Strauss of Amenia; two brothers, T. Paul McEnroe of Middletown, R.I., and Robert McEnroe of Painted Post, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Shana, Sayre and Tyler Strauss; one great-grandson, Lucan Strauss; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, John “Jack” McEnroe of Amenia and Alfred “Al” McEnroe of Dover Plains.A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated April 1 at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial followed at Amenia Island Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 45 Reade Place, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
