First Human Services Resource Fair for Latinos

The First Human Services Resource Fair targeting the Latino community in the Poughkeepsie area is a free event that will take place at the Family Partnership Center in Poughkeepsie (29 North Hamilton St.) on Friday, November 9th, from 3 to 7pm. The Fair will consist of a series of presentations that will take place in the Lateef Islam Auditorium of the FPC, free legal consultation on a new migratory policy, free flu shots, door prize raffles, free food served at the FPC cafeteria, along with over twenty human services organizations that will bring their Spanish-speaking representative for tabling at the cafeteria. The Fair will be providing information on immigration, education, health, domestic violence, social services, Mexican consulate and more.

Topics of the presentation are: DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, by Pace University attorney Robert Cisneros and moderated by attorney Gerardo Gutiérrez (The Gutierrez Law Firm and Somos la Llave del Futuro); ITIN, Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, by Maria Madera from the IRS; and GED, General Educational Development and ESL, English as a Second Language, by a representative from Dutchess Community College.Deferred action is a very important current issue affecting many young undocumented immigrants who may qualify to have a social security number, work permit and other benefits on a temporary basis. SALISBURY — Ken Gloss, proprietor of the Brattle Book Shop in Boston and a fixture on public television’s “Antiques Roadshow” entertained a bevy of bibliophiles at the Scoville Memorial Library Wednesday, April 17 with stories from the book trade.

He also gave quick assessments of books to about a dozen people after his remarks.

Housing group seeks approval of land transfer

KENT — The plan to develop about 10 units of affordable housing on town land inched forward this week following a lightly attended April 12 public hearing concerning the transfer of 1.16 acres of land from the town to Kent Affordable Housing (KAH).

The hearing gave residents a chance to comment on a conditional approval for the transfer, which would be done at no cost to KAH. The proposal still faces a town meeting vote.
