Honor veterans every day

With Memorial Day being this week, I would like to say thank you to all vets and active and reserve duty service men and woman. My dad served in World War II. My brothers seerved during Vietnam and my brother-in-law and boyfriend are also Vietnam vets. My brother Richard grew up in the Northwest Corner and enlisted 50 years ago as of May 14.

Rick, as we called him, served as a medic in Vietnam. He served bravely and stayed on in the U.S. Army, serving 25 years and retiring as a master sergeant. Rick has seen the world. I think that’s not too bad for a small-town boy. We are so proud of his service. Rick had little time for anything else, just focusing on his career.

But, he did manage to meet a wonderful lady in Germany and have two children. It can’t be easy raising a family while serving. I want to say thank you to those families also. They serve as well. Rick is now living in Texas with his wife and family. He is about to retire a second time from his civilian job. I hope this one sticks and our brave soldier gets to relax.

So not just Memorial Day weekend, but always, if we see what looks like just some older guy walking around and he is wearing something that says he is a vet, take the time to shake that hand and say thank you or buy them a cup of coffee.
