Hotchkiss hosts Founders League swimming and diving

LAKEVILLE — The Founders League Swimming and Diving Tournament for area prep schools was hosted by The Hotchkiss School last week. The diving competition was on Wednesday, Feb. 23; swimming competition was Saturday, Feb. 26.Schools participating included Hotchkiss, Kent School, Choate Rosemary Hall, Loomis Chaffee, Kingswood-Oxford, Miss Porter’s School, Westminster, Avon Old Farms and the Ethel Walker School.Winners were calculated by tallying the total points earned by the teams. Loomis Chaffee was victorious in the girls division, and Choate won in the boys division. Hotchkiss placed fifth out of eight teams in the girls division; Kent placed seventh. In the boys division, Hotchkiss came in second and Kent was fourth.However, Hotchkiss dominated the boys diving, even though the school only had one student in the competition. Jack McCarthy, class of 2013, won boys diving with a final score of 368.35. Jamal Henry of Kent came in second with 297.45 points.The swimming competition on Saturday, Feb. 26 brought a first-place win for Hotchkiss in the boys 200-yard freestyle relay. The winning team of Noah Callaghan, Jack Parker, Kenneth Low and Stefan Brown finished with a combined time of 1:30:52.Kent School won the boys 200-yard freestyle race; Michael Lindburg placed first with a time of 1:47:54. Jack Shanley of Hotchkiss placed second, with a time of 1:51:33.Hotchkiss also did well in the boys 50-yard freestyle race. While Alex Poltash of Choate won the race, Stefan Brown, Kenneth Low and Jack Parker of Hotchkiss came in second, third and fourth, respectively.Jack Shanley and Ian Bateman also claimed second- and third-place honors for Hotchkiss in the boys 500-yard freestyle race.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
