Two Housy wrestlers medal in Berkshire League tournament

FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic Valley Regional High School wrestlers competed in the Berkshire League Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Feb.12, at Nonnewaug High School in Woodbury, Conn.

Coaches Tom Medonis and Mike Spadaccini only seeded four wrestlers but still managed first-, second- and fourth-place finishes from their sparce squad.

Dominic Ghi, wrestling 119 pounds, started his finals match by quickly taking Oliver Wolcott Technical School’s Derrick Lopes down and putting him to his back for a quick four-point margin.

The 10-1 victory earned Dominic his second Berkshire League Championship.

Sophomore Tyler Spadaccini, wrestling 152 pounds, took second place after losing a close match to Alan Sanford, Thomaston’s two-time Class S champion.

True to Spadaccini’s reputation for seeking out the toughest competitors, he bumped up to 152 for the Berkshire Leagues but will return to his regular weight class of 145 pounds for next week’s state tournament.

Senior Dominic Sanchez, 125-pound weight class, won one match and lost two for a fourth-place finish.

Sophomore Hannah Arel, 103 pounds, wrestled twice and lost both very tough matches.

The Berkshire League tournament signals the end of the regular wrestling season and all wrestlers are to be congratulated for their fierce effort in the face of injury and adversity. All are wished good luck in this weekend’s state tournament.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
