Elinor (Jennings) Mills

KENT — Elinor (Jennings) Mills, formerly of Westport, died peacefully on Jan. 11, 2011, at the Lutheran Home of Southbury, two days before her 97th birthday.

Elinor Bertha Jennings was born at Grandview Farm on Hoydens Hill in Fairfield and lived there until 1929 when her family moved to Knapps Highway. Elinor attended Timothy Dwight School in Greenfield Hill and graduated from Roger Ludlow High School in 1933.

She married Clifton Hoyt Mills in 1940 and moved to Cross Highway in Westport, where she lived for over 70 years in the home they built together.

She worked at General Electric in Bridgeport until 1943.  Mrs. Mills was a dedicated homemaker and mother, working alongside her husband on one of the last poultry farms in Westport, raising chickens and selling eggs to local customers throughout Fairfield County.   

She enjoyed crewel, crochet and sewing.  In addition Elinor spent many hours working in her flower and vegetable gardens.

Elinor is survived by her sister, Shirley Fredericks of Easton, Conn.; her son, Clifton Mills Jr., of Northfield, N.H.; her daughter, Virginia Lewis of Kent; her niece, Judith McWaters of Bethlehem and other nieces and nephews in Connecticut, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania; her grandchildren, Polly Fife and her husband, Kevin, of Northfield, N.H., Clifton Mills III and his wife, Elizabeth, of Fort Drum, N.Y., Lawrence Lewis Jr. and his fiancée, Leann Bartomioli, of Irondequoit, N.Y.; her great-granddaughters, Megan and Rachel Fife; and her loving caregiver of the past four years, Jacqueline Desravines.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, Sarah Marguerite Knapp and Clifford Leslie Jennings of Fairfield; her twin sister, Evelyn Banks of Fairfield; her sister, Helene Deary of New Hampshire; her son-in-law, Lawrence Lewis Sr. of Kent; and a close cousin, Beatrice Cedarholm of Philadelphia, Pa.  

A service of thanksgiving for the life of Elinor was held Jan. 19 at Jess Lee United Methodist Church in Easton. Interment will be private in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
