Cary offers talk on infectious diseases and how to predict them


MILLBROOK— The most recent Friday night presentation at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, which celebrated the institute’s 35th anniversary, was a talk by Barbara Han, disease ecologist.

Han immediately cut to the chase and explained how predicting diseases is done. Han, who has been at Cary for more than three years, said scientists input patterns from animals, insects and flora into a computer and can usually pinpoint which diseases occur in which places, and often when. It’s much like how market researchers use data to predict sales trends.
