Roger Festa

NORTH CANAAN — Roger Festa, 98, of Birch Lane died early on the morning of Dec. 24, 2010, at the Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of Eloise (Milton) Festa.

Roger was born June 18, 1912, in New York City, N.Y., the son of the late Raffaela (Decclesis) and Filippo Festa.

Roger spent his working life in advertising sales. He was last employed by Columbia University, where he sold advertising for the Columbia Daily Spectator newspaper.

Prior to that he had sold advertising space for many magazine publishers.

Roger served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.

His family remembers Roger’s love of life, and his enjoyment of good food.

Roger stayed abreast of current issues, and was a frequent contributor to the editorial pages of The Lakeville Journal. He served on the Democratic Town Committee in North Canaan for many years. Roger was an original member of the HousaTonics barbershop chorus. His strong lead voice was heard throughout the Northwest Corner during the HousaTonics’ many concerts.

He also was an avid bridge player and member of the Sharon Bridge Club.

In addition to his wife, Eloise, Roger is survived by his son, David Festa and his wife, Liliana, of Bristol; his two sisters, Raffaela “Honey� Crisp and Franchescia Brintz , both of New Jersey; many nieces and nephews; and many grand- and great-grand-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. in the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
