Gentlemen Jackets win at home, 52-39

WINSTED — The Gilbert Yellowjacket boys basketball squad chalked up their second win of the season by defeating Terryville 52-39 in their home opener on Tuesday, Dec. 21.

The Jackets wasted little time in striking first, after Austin Brochu won the opening tip-off, battled for a rebound under Terryville’s net and scored the first points of the game.

Gilbert appeared to take control of the game by quickly setting a high pace that Terryville struggled to match. The Jackets were quite strong beneath the net in both zones, successfully snagging rebounds to maintain control and build offensive momentum.

That momentum seemed to stutter as a handful of Gilbert fouls and traveling calls derailed the locomotive offensive drive they had sustained early in the first. Terryville was able to close the gap, but the Jacket defensive efforts afforded them a slight 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Jacket offense labored early in the second as all their offensive zone possession and movement stammered just short of finishing out a scoring opportunity. The slight lapse in Gilbert’s offense allowed Terryville to tie, but Yellowjacket Devon Molway tallied a three-pointer, then another shortly after that, and followed it up with a good defensive block that he turned into another Gilbert scoring chance. Terryville refused to fade quietly, however, and tightened the gap to 24-18 before halftime.

Gilbert reclaimed their fast-paced offense and quick double-back defense out of the break and quickly rebuilt their lead. The Jacket defense looked particularly sharp, cutting off the passing lanes, winning battles under their net and forcing Terryville to cough up turnovers while trying to  move out of their own end.

Yellowjackets Robert Skinner, Eli Romero and Brochu were remarkably effective in the final half of the game, setting up and finishing smart offensive plays while laboring defensively to break up Terryville’s chances. The trio produced a play of particular note late in the game, when a colossal swat by Skinner to break up a Terryville layup turned into a clean outlet pass for Romero, who then neatly set up Brochu beneath the boards to score and further extend the Jackets’ lead.

Terryville continued to grapple and toil until the final buzzer, often no more than 10 points from tying, but the Jackets managed to preserve their lead and took a 52-39 victory at home.

Brochu and Romero both finished the night with team high point totals of 14 apiece, while Skinner finished out the evening with 11. The Jackets’ season record improves to 2-0.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
