Webutuck defender named to All-State team

WEBUTUCK — One of Webutuck’s girls varsity soccer athletes was named to the New York State Sports Writers Association’s Class C Fifth Team this past year, distinguishing her as one of the top 20 defenders in Class C in the state, a rare accomplishment for a Webutuck athlete. The Millerton News caught with up this year’s winner, Meagan, after her season.

Name: Meagan McCoy

Age: 16

Grade: Junior

Years on Soccer Team: “I’ve been on varsity since ninth grade  but I’ve been playing soccer on town teams since the age of 5. I’ve also been on a travel team for about seven years.â€

Biggest soccer game this past season and why: “I really loved our away game against Rhinebeck. As a team, we were all working together well and everyone had a great game. Personally, I was able to start some combination plays as well as make sideline runs down the field. Getting to play some offense is always fun for me. That game showed us how we can play if we all try our best.

Proudest Accomplishment of the past season: “As a team I am proud that we had a winning season. As for a personal accomplishment, I have to say being named to All-State is what I’m most proud of.

Goals for next season: “We are hoping for a Section 9 title next season, and since we are losing only one senior, it is definitely a goal we can accomplish.

From her soccer coach, Mark Moren: “I’m very proud of Meagan for this accomplishment. She has really worked hard and improved as one of my most talented and dedicated players since she started with me on varsity in the ninth grade. As one of my captains, she is a strong player and leader on and off the field.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
