Anthony Joseph Zavagnin

NORTH CANAAN — Anthony Joseph Zavagnin, 90, of Granite Avenue Extension, died Dec. 11, 2010, at Sharon Hospital. He was the husband of Lena (Sebben) Zavagnin.

Mr. and Mrs. Zavagnin were married on Nov. 27, 1948, and celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this year.  

Anthony was born in Zugliano, Italy, son of the late Elizabeth (Ghirardello) and Francis Zavagnin.  He moved to the U.S. from Italy at the age of 16.

Anthony was a carpenter and a contractor by trade.  He worked alongside his brother, Louis, at A&L Zavagnin.  Anthony continued the business after the passing of his brother.  

A communicant of St. Joseph Church in North Canaan, he was also a 60-year member of the Berkshire Council Knights of Columbus. He answered his country’s call and served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II.  He served in the Pacific Theater of Operation as a radioman and saw action on several Pacific islands, including Guadalcanal. Anthony was a member of the Couch-Pipa VFW Post in North Canaan.

He was also an avid golfer.  During his playing time he recorded two holes-in-one. He also enjoyed gardening and was especially proud of his zinnias.

In addition to his wife, Anthony is survived by his daughter, Teresa, and her husband, Peter Bogdanchik, of Knoxville, Tenn.;  his sister, Celeste Zavagnin Pigato of Bolzano, Italy; his six grandchildren,  Elise and Adam Bogdanchik, Laura Taylor, Anthony, Martina and Elizabeth Zavagnin; and his five great-grandchildren, Bennett, Cameron and Tate Bogdanchik and Jack and Andrew Taylor.  

In addition to his brother, Louis, he was also predeceased by his son, Joseph Zavagnin; and his sister, Josephine Zavagnin.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Dec. 15 in St. Joseph  Church in North Canaan.  Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial donations may be sent to the North Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps, PO Box 178, North Canaan, CT 06018.  

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
