Gilbert scores convincing Class M playoff victory

TORRINGTON — About 1,000 fans braved an incoming rainstorm Tuesday night to watch the Gilbert-Northwestern Yellowjackets football team score a convincing win over Plainville in the first round of the Class M playoffs. The game was played at Torrington High School under the lights.

For both teams, this was the first time making the playoffs, but the Yellowjackets had been riding a wave of success that was capped off by a 37-18 Thanksgiving Day victory over Housatonic Valley Regional High School (see story, Page A5). Gilbert-Northwestern has been ranked fourth in the Class M tournament, and Plainville was ranked fifth.

Tuesday night’s game, Gilbert-Northwestern’s first playoff game in state history, put an exclamation point on the Gilbert momentum, with the final score coming in at 41-6.

The next hurdle for Gilbert’s 9-2 squad is Hillhouse High School of New Haven, which though ranked eighth in the tournament surprised number-one-ranked Berlin with a last-minute touchdown to win 33-30 Tuesday night over the state defending champions.

Further south, the Class M second-seed New London crushed Platt High School 53-14 Tuesday while third-seed Brookfield similarly routed number-six pick Lyman Hall, 50-21.

If the scores say anything, it’s that this year’s playoff games have been about offense, and that’s what Gilbert delivered Tuesday night, scoring 21 points in the first quarter and 14 in the second, while not allowing a touchdown by Plainville until the fourth quarter. Outstanding players Sean Fitzgerald, Bobby Lippincott and Drew McCarthy have been among the key contributors this year.

Saturday’s game versus Hillhouse will be at a time and place to be announced.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
